About 1.5 billion people worldwide suffer from chronic pain, but many do not have to. Despite costing the health care system more than $600 billion a year, existing treatments for chronic pain fail to provide relief for many people. Recent neuroscience breakthroughs show that most chronic pain results from the brain misinterpreting safe messages from the body as if they were dangerous. Research has found that the brain has the power to generate pain even in the absence of physical damage.
Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is a system of psychological techniques that retrains the brain to accurately interpret and respond to signals from the body, breaking the cycle of chronic pain. The treatment also includes training in managing emotions that may make pain “turn on”. Although various treatments aim to manage pain, PRT stands apart as an evidence-based treatment to eliminate pain.
What To Expect During Your PRT Treatment
In PRT sessions with me, a Pain Reprocessing Therapy and somatic coach, as well as a yoga and mindfulness instructor, we’ll work together to explore the mind-body connection and uncover the patterns that contribute to your pain. Our sessions will begin with a personalized assessment of your symptoms, background, and goals, allowing me to tailor the treatment to your unique needs. Using cognitive restructuring, we’ll identify any negative thought patterns or beliefs surrounding your pain, and work to replace them with healthier, more empowering perspectives.
As part of my integrative approach, we’ll incorporate techniques from pain reprocessing therapy, mindfulness and somatic practices, helping you become more in tune with your body’s signals and cultivate a deeper sense of calm. Through gentle exposure to pain sensations in a safe, supported environment, I’ll guide you to reframe your experience of pain and reduce fear. You’ll also learn relaxation and mindfulness techniques, like deep breathing or meditation, to manage stress and regulate your nervous system. Central to our work will be developing self-compassion—learning to care for yourself with kindness and setting boundaries that support your overall well-being.
Between sessions, I may provide exercises or self-care practices to help reinforce what you’ve learned, allowing for continued progress and deeper healing as you move through your pain reprocessing journey.
